Delicious, juicy, with a subtle hint of crème brûlée. A real treat. -
Anaïs H. (FR)

A hidden gem of the tropics, sapodilla has been enjoyed across Southeast Asia, Central America, and the Caribbean for generations.

Brown sugar and caramel notes, with soft flesh that can remind some people of pear, malt, or butterscotch.

Naturally rich in fibre, sapodilla also contains minerals such as copper and potassium.

How To Eat & Store

Step 1 - Check Ripeness

Give to pressure + brown skin = ripe.
Firm = ripen at room temperature 2-3 days.

Step 2 - Open

Halve lengthways. Remove the inedible central seeds.

Step 3 - Enjoy

Eat fresh with the peel · In tropical fruit salads

Step 4 - Storage

• Ripen at room temperature
• Once ripe: refrigerate and consume within 3-4 days

Taste Profile

Sapodilla is sweet, rich, and surprisingly complex. Its soft brown flesh combines notes of brown sugar, caramel, pear, and malt, with a gentle depth that sets it apart from more familiar tropical fruits. When perfectly ripe, the texture becomes smooth and yielding, almost like a soft pear infused with caramel.

Origin & Sourcing

Where It Begins

Thailand, where the Malay sapodilla variety thrives in the tropical climate and fertile soils of the country's lowland regions. The warm temperatures allow the fruit to develop its characteristic sweetness and smooth texture.

How It's Grown

Sapodilla grows on resilient tropical trees that can live for more than a century. The fruits mature gradually on the branches, developing their distinctive brown-sugar notes as they ripen.

How It Reaches You

Shipped by air for maximum freshness. If the fruit is still firm on arrival, simply leave it at room temperature for a few days until it softens gently to the touch. That's when sapodilla reveals its best flavor and texture.

Description

The fruit that tastes like caramelized pear

Most tropical fruits are celebrated for their freshness, acidity, or vibrant aromas. Sapodilla is different.

Instead of citrus, pineapple, or floral notes, sapodilla develops flavors more commonly associated with desserts: brown sugar, caramel, malt, and butterscotch. It's one of the few fruits that naturally evokes ingredients found in baking rather than other fruits.

Originally native to southern Mexico and Central America, sapodilla spread across the tropics centuries ago and became particularly popular throughout Southeast Asia, where it is now widely cultivated and appreciated. The Malay variety is especially valued for its smooth texture and balanced sweetness.

Patience is essential with sapodilla. The fruit should never be eaten firm. Allow it to soften until it yields gently to pressure, much like a ripe avocado. At this stage, the flesh becomes tender, aromatic, and develops the rich flavors that make sapodilla so distinctive.

Simply cut the fruit in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon, avoiding the glossy black seeds. For many first-time tasters, sapodilla is a surprise: a fruit that seems to borrow more from caramel and brown sugar than from the tropical flavors they expected.

Reviews Summary
Customers say these sapodilla fruits taste like caramel, butterscotch, or burnt sugar with sweet, honey-like flavors. Many describe the texture as juicy, soft, and creamy when ripe, similar to eating with a spoon like kiwi. The fruits arrive at different ripeness stages, allowing customers to enjoy them over several days as they ripen at room temperature. Common flavor comparisons include pears with caramel, dates, marzipan, and cinnamon notes. While most find them deliciously sweet and satisfying, some mention the taste is acquired or too intense. Several note the large, easily removable seeds and appreciate the careful packaging that prevents damage during shipping.

Something completely different. Caramel and incredibly sweet. Otherwise, it's hard to find a comparison to something else. Simply unique. Fruits arrived perfectly ripened. Great experience

    Hello Stéphanie,

thank you for your honest feedback on Sapodilla Malay.

I totally understand your disappointment and I am sorry that you did not like this fruit at all. It's really a shame to have such a negative experience, especially when you discover a new exotic fruit.

Sapodilla actually has a very particular taste with its creamy texture and sweet taste that can be reminiscent of pear or brown sugar. Unfortunately, it is not a fruit that everyone likes, and I fully understand that you had this reaction. Was the fruit you tasted ripe? Because if the sapodilla is not ripe, it has an astringent taste

    .

We hope that this experience will not discourage you from discovering other exotic fruits that may better suit your tastes.

    Sincerely, Katrin from JF
